This
talented quartet will open the Cathedral Arts 2008-2009 Season in a
concert held under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency
Anthony Cary, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom and Mrs.
Cary.
Cantabile has presented more than 2,500 performances around the
world, including concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall and classical
parodies at London’s BBC “Proms in the Park”. The quartet
consistently
delights audiences with its amazing range of programmes from Jazz to
Madrigals, from Beatles to Broadway, also paying tribute to some
great vocal groups of the past - all presented with a unique blend
of British humor and musical virtuosity!

Arts 2008-2009 Season at Christ Church Cathedral on October 3rd.
The male a capella group, comprised of three tenors and a baritone,

Commemorating the 90th Anniversary of
the End of World War One
The National
Capital Concert Band will perform in a Remembrance Day
Programme on November 10th to mark the 90th Anniversary of the
end of World War One.
As in the
past, a portion of the proceeds of this event will be given to the
Perley-Rideau Veterans' Hospital.

Commemorating 175th Anniversary of the
Abolition of Slavery in the British Empire
Freedom 175
is a musical celebration of some of the great Canadian
heroes who worked for abolition.
This special
showcase, hosted by a Canadian celebrity, will sing their praises
and tell their stories in a unique form of storytelling. The intense
emotions and experiences will be expressed through music, song,
dance and the spoken word, some to the rhythm of the drum. The
programme will feature renowned choirs, talented Canadian actors,
brilliant performers, and many
others. The leading choir will be the Gospel Choir of
Montreal, under the direction of Kim Sherwood.
Freedom 175 will
be an afternoon of awareness and enjoyment!

Luc
Beauséjour, harpsichordist and organist, is renowned for the
elegance, virtuosity, and expressiveness of his playing which has
won him an enthusiastic audience and the continuing praise of
critics and music specialists.
Renowned
throughout North America and beyond as one of the finest trumpet
players of his generation, Paul Merkelo is recognized for his
“pure technical prowess”, as well as for his “unusual lyrical
gifts”.
Samantha
Louis-Jean, soprano, was born in Paris, where she began her
artistic training in music and in ballet. Ms. Louis-Jean has
won the Georges-Cédric-Ferguson Opera Scholarship twice, as well as
a scholarship from the Jeunesses Musicales du Canada.

January 25, 2009 - 8:00PM – Commemorating the
250th Anniversary of the Birth of Robert Burns
- Meredith Hall & Friends
Soprano
Meredith Hall and
La Nef will pay homage to the prolific Scottish
poet Robert Burns (1759-1796) with a selection of songs and
instrumental pieces on the theme of love. This talented soprano will
sing in the Scottish and English dialects of the period,
interpreting the texts of Robert Burns with striking aptness and a
rare intensity.
Instruments
may include the lute, baroque guitar, viola de gamba, bagpipe, harp
and percussion.

Commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the

AM’s, Marci Ien, will feature the People’s Gospel Choir of
Montreal; Walter Borden, Stratford actor; and, other talented
Canadian performers.

April 25, 2009 - 2:00PM – Youth Concert
This concert is part of
Cathedral Arts’ annual concert and lecture series and celebrates
exceptional young performers who live or study in the Ottawa region.
Dance, theatre arts, and music will all be featured, with selections
from the classical, popular, and native Canadian traditions, as well
as work created by the performers themselves.
The programme will showcase
up-and-coming young artists Nathan Haller (tenor), Lara Deutsch
(flute), and Jacob Armstrong (saxophone), as well as the brother and
sister duo, Bryan and Silvie Cheng (cello and piano).
Featured ensembles include the
Dandelion Dance Company, whose young members choreograph their own
pieces; the Principal’s Players, a theatre group with a
Shakespearean focus from Canterbury High School; and students from
the Nunavut Sivuniksavut Training College program, who will perform
traditional Inuit throat-singing and drumming.
This diverse and exciting
presentation offers a wonderful opportunity to see some of Ottawa’s
most promising young performers and a rare chance for Ottawa
audiences to hear the remarkable art of throat-singing! |
